The pressure relief valve (also known as the safety valve) in astorage water heater is a compact yet critical safety device. Installed at the cold water inlet, it serves a dual protective function.

Its primary role is "pressure relief protection." During heating, as water temperature rises, pressure inside the tank increases sharply. When pressure exceeds the rated value (typically 0.7 MPa), the valve automatically opens, releasing a small amount of hot water to ensure the internal pressure remains within safe limits, preventing tank rupture due to overpressure.
Secondly, it "prevents backflow." The valve contains a check mechanism that effectively stops heated water from flowing back into the cold water pipes, ensuring hot water output efficiency and avoiding potential damage to cold water pipelines.

Occasional dripping during heating is normal operation. However, if continuous dripping occurs without heating or no water flows at all, professional inspection or replacement is urgently required.
It is recommended to manually lift the valve lever monthly to ensure its flexibility and reliable operation in emergencies. This small but vital component is key to ensuring household hot water safety.
